Philosophers have, of late years, considered chiefly the tendency of affections, and have given little attention to the relation which they stand in to the cause which excites them. How often do we see vivacity and impertinence mistaken for wit; fluency for argument; sound for sense; a loud or musical voice for eloquence! Indeed, it appears to me that in trying to get at the meaning of these gentle and enjoyable shakings of the mind, we shall do well to start, so to speak, with the bodily shakings, which are, to say the least, much more accessible to study. The example, indeed, of this contrivance would soon probably be followed, and whoever had occasion to express a similar relation between any other objects would be very apt to do it by making a similar variation on the name of the co-relative object. Still another has learned to play the piano well enough to amuse himself in his idle hours. Should this be the librarian, or a committee of the trustees, or the board itself, or an advisory committee of outsiders? They are links in the chain of the universe, and the grappling-irons that bind us to it. It is a face which you would beware of rousing into anger or hostility, as you would beware of setting in motion some complicated and dangerous machinery. These are the reasons which have been my inducements in adding this Appendix; at the same time, to make the cases, in this naked form, as interesting and as useful as possible, I have not only drawn them with the most minute attention to truth, but to each I have appended some appropriate and useful observation. So much has been written upon the Svastika, however, that I need not enter upon its arch?ological distribution.
